How To Care For Silver Jewelry
Written by Erin Vicinanzo
The pieces in the ‘Heal my Heart’ collection are made of silver and, as a fun idea for a blog, I’m going to give some tips for care and cleaning. You never want to allow your jewelry to lose its beauty when it’s so easy to keep flawless. I hope you find this useful, for not only your ‘Heal my Heart’ pieces, but all your silver jewelry. I will admit to being guilty of some of these sins to silver, myself, but a quick reminder will make us all better caretakers.
Exposure to water, that has any type of chemical present, is not good for silver jewelry, even the shower. You may read that sentence and feel a sense of panic wash over you because it’s so common to jump in the shower still wearing your jewelry, but you’re not alone. I have also kept rings, earrings, and other items on not even thinking about the effect the water may have. So, take an extra few seconds in your daily routine to remove all of your jewelry. I’ll be honest, the real challenge lies in remembering to put it back on after. You should take your jewelry off before doing anything that might expose it to damaging chemicals, like housework.
Another fun fact about silver is how easy it can tarnish just from exposure to the air. If you put it in a jewelry box, on your bedside table, or just in a drawer it can turn color and lose its shine. Even though it may take time, silver does best when it’s stored in bags that are sealed properly, only one piece in each bag. Like the above tip, taking proper care of your items will add time to your day but it is very worth it in the long run. Polishing your silver, regularly, is also the best way to maintain its original glory. Using a microfiber cloth is an excellent way to clean your pieces because it’s soft like silver.
Don’t invest in expensive silver cleaner from a jewelry store, or even Wal-mart, because you can make it yourself. I hope these things were of help to you in your jewelry maintenance, and please feel free to share your own tips with us on our Facebook page. As a jewelry owner and designer, I am always looking for better ways to care for my pieces.
